Romantic Straße Road Trip

Romantic Strasse Road Trip Germany

I soon got the travel jitters since Covid-19 completely changed our lives. I was really looking forward to going on an adventure in a different environment for a few days. Flying was not an option for me, so a road trip in our neighboring country Germany was the easiest.

Germany is not normally my first choice when thinking about a vacation, but during my research I soon found out that the country is very underestimated. A seven-hour drive from Amsterdam you will find yourself in a completely different landscape that could come out of a fairytale.
Germany has mapped out a road called Romantic Road, which takes you past the cutest villages and castles in Germany.

You can make your own selection of which stops you want to make. Due to time constraints, we skipped most places, but visited what seemed like the highlights to me.

Neuschwanstein Castle

Residenzplatz 2, 97070 Würzburg, Germany

Neuschwanstein Castle Germany

Almost literally from a fairytale, as rumor has it that Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle is inspired by the Neuenschwanstein castle in Germany.
I had pinned the castle to my Pinterest board for years, so it was a fairytale that came true for me when we hiked to a special place to admire it.

The Neuenschwanstein Castle is one of the most popular castles to visit in Europe. We wanted to make sure we capture every aspect of this fairytale moment other than the traditional viewpoints. We had to hike up a hidden path close to the Marienbrüke that took us to this beautiful spot. If you want to follow the route, check it out the blog post from ‘She Wanders abroad’ here, for a detailed description.

Füssen is a small town just shy off the Austrian Border. It’s home to two stunning castles, the Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle. We didn’t just come here to see the castles though, as it has such a beautiful gothic town to explore. Füssen is a great place to go for a few days or even a day trip. There are even ski resorts here!

Füssen Heritage Museum

Residenzplatz 2, 97070 Würzburg, Germany

In the Füssen heritage museum there is a dreamy library that can be taken straight from the fairy tale “Belle and the Beast”. To be honest, I thought the rest of the museum was mediocre, but I wouldn’t have missed the library.

The Würzburg Residence is a former episcopal palace that has been a World Heritage Site since 1981. It is certainly worth spending an afternoon here. The well-maintained court gardens can be entered free of charge. Beautiful arrangements of flowers, beautifully trimmed trees, graceful fountains and walking routes that are perfect in a picture from any angle.

I also recommend buying a ticket to view the palace from the inside. Unfortunately you are not allowed to take pictures inside, but I can tell you that they are the most beautiful ceiling paintings I have ever seen, think of an angel painting, part of his outfit is finished with hanging fabric.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

91541 Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

If you follow the Romantic Road, you will come across many picturesque villages. We had to skip many because of the time, but I’m glad we saw Rothenburg ob der Tauber anyway.

This city center is built entirely in the medieval style with city walls that you can walk on. Explore the colorful streets with nice boutiques, you will even find a street here with various Christmas shops that sell Christmas items all year round.

To be as flexible as possible, we book the hotels on the same day en route. So we stayed longer than planned in Fussen. Most 3+ star hotels in this region have a nice view.

Here are some of the hotels we stayed at.

Lichtenstein Castle

Schloß Lichtenstein 1, 72805 Lichtenstein, Germany

On the way back we took a short detour to see Castle Lichtenstein, a former hunting lodge. The castle stands high on a rock. It is also called the fairytale castle of Württemberg.
A nice place to visit if you have extra time. I would only wait for the time to come, as renovations are underway that will obstruct the beautiful castle view.
